"On the Outside"
Material: 5 x oil paint on canvas
2 x large wooden doors
5 x mini wooden doors
6 x digital photographs
Rationale:
My body of work exhibits the notion of everyday experiences that are often taken for granted. It portrays places of comfort in which we enter through these doors so often, without realising the privilege they carry. The paintings of these places are accompanied by photographs which display homeless individuals who are unable to enter these doors in order to explore the simplicity of walking through a door each day that is not so simple for the homeless. By drawing on the works of Skid Robot, who "seeks to solve the social issue of homelessness through the power of art, design, technology, science, and the human spirit," my work represents under-valued norms that should be acknowledged and appreciated and aims to bring light to the homeless community.
