"In My Footsteps" Material: Series of 18 digital photographs Series of 6 tissue paper sculptures Plaster Mould
Rationale: My body of work explores the multifaceted roles women hold in Indian society. By portraying the female experience of marriage, education and poverty, it culminates in the continual ideal of obedience. The medium of photography accompanied with the projection of hindu script highlights the growing female empowerment in these scenarios by seeking autonomy. Through the incorporation of sculpture from the use of tissue paper and plaster moulding, the uniformity identified the need for women to flourish their sense of self, overcoming established patriarchal norms of submission. Ultimately my work becomes an avenue for the realisation of women's potential in overcoming adversity, becoming a signifier of strength and resilience.
Originally conversations with my teacher led to the idea of projecting the Hindi script in different locations, but ultimately was kept in the school auditorium due to COVID-19 restrictions. Also, photographs of Hindu temples were going to be taken but were once again not completed for the same reason.
